Thinking from the Tree's Perspective: The Harsh Reality of Indoor "Omotenashi"

I recently had the honor of attending both the first and second terms of the 100th Anniversary Kokufu Bonsai Exhibition at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum. As a prestigious event graced by the visit of the Imperial Family, it is a truly remarkable occasion. Seeing these "living masterpieces," crafted with the heart and soul of bonsai masters, is undoubtedly a vital part of preserving this cultural heritage.
However, during this visit, I decided to shift my perspective and look at the exhibition from the tree’s point of view.

Throughout the venue, I saw staff members meticulously misting the trees. This sight is a testament to their professional dedication—a desperate battle to protect the world-class beauty of these specimens. Yet, behind the glamour of the stage, did anyone else notice the subtle signs of exhaustion in the trees by the final day?

To a bonsai, a modern indoor space with constant air conditioning or heating is more than just uncomfortable; it is a "harsh desert" beyond our imagination. These trees are meant to breathe with the changing seasons and draw life from the open air. In a climate-controlled room, the unnaturally dry air strips away their vitality, second by second. No matter how perfectly a masterpiece has been nurtured, its ability to maintain its brilliance in a human-centric environment is limited to just a few days—the absolute edge of its biological endurance.

Even if you were to own a magnificent live bonsai, "permanently" displaying it in a guest room or a climate-controlled office to provide omotenashi (hospitality) is a near-impossible task if you value the tree's life. For a bonsai, remaining in such a space is like watching the sand fall in an hourglass that never stops—a relentless trial where its life force is drained away moment by moment.

This is where we might consider a new evolution in bonsai decoration: Kogei Bonsai (Artisan Paper/Craft Bonsai).

Whether in the dry heat of winter or the chilled air of summer, Kogei Bonsai maintains its lush, vibrant appearance without ever fading, bestowing a permanent sense of dignity upon any room. It honors the "ephemeral beauty" of traditional bonsai while realizing a "perfect omotenashi"—one that remains unchanged 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, in any business or living environment.

Regardless of the surroundings, Kogei Bonsai instantly transforms its setting into a space of high prestige. Choosing this freedom of display is, perhaps, the most thoughtful form of hospitality for our modern age.
